Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures

March 13, 2026 July 19, 2026

A sweeping survey of Afrofuturism — the cultural aesthetic and philosophy that intersects Black history and culture with science fiction, technology, and visions of the future — tracing the tradition from its origins in the work of Sun Ra, Octavia Butler, and Wangechi Mutu to the contemporary artists, musicians, and filmmakers who carry it forward. The exhibition features painting, sculpture, video, fashion, and sound installations by over 50 international artists, alongside archival materials and ephemera from the worlds of music, film, and literature. The Brooklyn Museum's historically engaged curatorial approach situates Afrofuturism within the long struggle for Black liberation and self-determination.
