A landmark exhibition examining the revolutionary technical innovations of Jan van Eyck and his contemporaries, who transformed European painting in the fifteenth century by mastering the properties of oil as a binding medium. Through rare loans from European collections and new scientific analysis of the Met's own Flemish holdings, the exhibition reconstructs the workshop practices and artistic ambitions of the early Netherlandish masters. The show includes newly discovered underdrawings and paint cross-sections displayed alongside finished masterworks.
